Change a barcode on 4,000 printed folding carton without redoing the whole packaging

You have 4,000 folding carton already printed and ready to be used for packaging, but one barcode ultimately needs to be replaced.

Are you really going to destroy everything and start over because one small element is no longer correct?

Context

4,000 100 ml printed folding have already been printed. Their design is compliant with the product, and the packaging is ready to be used for filling.

The only issue: the already printed EAN code needs to be replaced.

The challenge is that the existing barcode is printed on a pink background. To replace it cleanly, the existing barcode must first be completely covered before printing the new one.

The covering block must also be slightly larger than the existing area to ensure that the old barcode is fully covered.

Our intervention

After receiving several samples for testing, OVERPRINT confirmed the technical feasibility of the operation.

A BAG is then sent to the client to precisely validate the graphic and technical solution.

The proposed solution consists of two steps, carried out only on the area requiring correction.

1st step: Covering the existing barcode

A white/grey block measuring 33.6 × 13.3 mm is overprinted over the existing 31.5 × 12 mm area.

This additional margin ensures that the existing barcode is completely covered. The combination of white and grey also improves coverage on the pink background.

2nd step: Reprinting the new code

The new EAN code is then reprinted in black on the covering block.

The intervention therefore focuses only on the area requiring correction, without affecting the material, shape or design of the existing sleeve.

Result

The existing packaging remains usable. Its material, shape and design required no modification to correct this element.

This intervention saved 4,000 folding carton from being destroyed and avoided the costs that would have been incurred by reproducing the entire stock.

Give packaging a second chance

A barcode to be replaced, a regulatory statement to be changed, a weight, an origin or a product information to be corrected does not necessarily mean that an entire stock of packaging has to be discarded.

In this case, a few square centimetres requiring correction could have led to the destruction and reproduction of 4,000 folding carton. OVERPRINT intervened only where necessary, preserving everything that could be kept.
